Gammarizer Report: The Baron of Quest Monster

I tested the Gammarizer with a group of friends today, starting with our hometown of Westminster which we changed into the Gamma Terra town of Quest Monster. Only one player out of the six had played Gamma World, and one player was new to RPGs altogether. Here’s a brief recap.

Characters:

  • P’al the VIIIth, Pyrokinetic Mind Breaker
  • Sundew, Empath Plant
  • Automated Interactive Defense System, Giant Gravity Controller
  • Stan Johnson, Speedster Mind Breaker
  • Professor Mastermind Who Is Bad At Science, Cockroach Mind Coercer (later, Stephen Hawk-King, Mind Coercer Hawkoid)
  • Chairman Meow, Hypercognitive Felinoid

The Plot Elements were (some paraphrased slightly):

  • The Courthouse, full of Mind-Coercers who use their powers to prosecute the guilty by forcing the accused to confess (much quicker that way.) Labeled as Hook/Setup.
  • The Westminster Public Library, where a cult had summoned fiery plasma creatures. Labeled as Encounter.
  • The Airport, now the site of a gravity cannon. Labeled as Encounter.
  • McDaniel College, where a tribe of felines quest for a legendary ball of yarn. Labeled as Complication/Setback.
  • Westminster Park, where the the plants had come alive and were forming an army. Labeled as Climax.

The Mind Coercer prosecutors, a collective of psychic robot prosecutors named LAWL, drew the party in by calling to them in their minds to help retrieve an escaped convict, a bovine humanoid who had declared himself the Baron of the Quest Monster. With promises to reward the PCs however they requested, they set off after the Baron in the direction of the library.

The library was guarded by plasma creatures, an acid goop monster, and some mutated flying radioactive silverfish. After dispatching them, they ventured into the library. Operating the computer systems lead to a list of the books most recently searched for, one a catalog on the effects of gravitons on various organisms, and the other a layout of the airport. The party headed towards the books and encountered a massive pile of feral cats who resisted any attempt to move them. A combination of a jury-rigged noise machine and some artful petting got them to the center, where a mutated intelligent cat named Dougal explained their situation. The Baron promised them information about the ball of yarn they sought in exchange for keeping “riffraff” away from the books, but A.I.D.S. convinced Dougal to let them know where he was heading. After finding out that it was his precious airport in danger, A.I.D.S. smashed through the wall of the library to head there immediately, the rest of the party close behind.

The main gravity cannon controller chamber had been broken into, guarded by drones and a reprogrammed Hyper Intelligent Virtuoid robot. The Baron of Quest Monster tampered with the console, firing upon the Westminster Park with it to enact his revenge on LAWL. The party  deactivated the forcefield around the Baron, crushed the guard drones, and reset Hyper Intelligent Virtuoid, but not in enough time to stop the cannon from firing. In the process of the fight, Professor Mastermind Who Is Bad At Science was hit by a stray rocket and bled to death on the ground. Chairman Meow reanimated the body of the Baron to take back to LAWL, and the party returned to the Courthouse to stop the graviton-animated plants.

A final battle took place on the steps of the courthouse, fighting a group of bladed plants. They offered Sundew a chance to join them and become her army, but the plant refuses and stayed true. They were joined at the last moment by Stephen Hawk-King who came from the cloud city of Cloud City to defend LAWL.

The Baron of Quest Monster recovered and his plans for revenge thwarted, the Prosecutors of LAWL sentenced the escapee to 20 hours of community service (just as the reanimation ended). The party was charged with several misdemeanors, the fines for which was taken out of their rewards.
